Spring Awakens in New England: Renewal at Tending Your Yard

Spring in New England is a magical time, marking the joyful renewal of life in our gardens. At Tending Your Yard, Tending the Earth, the first days of April are especially vibrant, filled with anticipation and discovery as nature awakens.

Early Signs of Spring in New England

In our garden, signs of spring in New England are abundant. The daffodils, sheltered in a warm nook by our dining room’s floor-to-ceiling windows, have already burst into full bloom. Surrounding these cheerful flowers, other bulbs bravely push upward, sending out their first green shoots. Even the humble dandelion makes its early appearance, signaling the changing season.

Wildlife joins the celebration, too. Just last week, we spotted our first rabbit of the year, hopping gently through the yard. Soon, more creatures will arrive, adding to the joyful bustle.

Birds Bring the Music of Spring in New England

Each morning now greets us with a chorus of returning birds. Red-winged blackbirds, scarlet tanagers, yellow warblers, common yellowthroats, wood thrushes, and vibrant Baltimore orioles have returned from their southern journeys. Their songs fill the air with life and melody, calling us to pause, listen, and appreciate the wonders around us.

Spring in New England: Pruning for Health and Growth

Spring in New England also marks the perfect time for the essential garden ritual of pruning. Thoughtful pruning supports tree and shrub health by enhancing air circulation and allowing sunlight to penetrate deep into the plant canopy. Today, we’re delighted to host Jen Kettell, a master arborist who brings over a decade of expertise from her time at the Arnold Arboretum. Through her business, Radiant Leaf Consulting, Jen guides our gardening crew, teaching precise and mindful pruning techniques. Her practice aligns beautifully with our mission at Tending Your Yard, Tending the Earth: responsible stewardship of our natural world. Exposing fresh pruning cuts to sunlight and air accelerates healing, promoting vibrant new growth.

Finding Grounding and Healing in the Garden

In these uncertain times, our garden becomes a sanctuary—a place to reconnect and find peace. The fresh spring air, warm sun, and rhythmic tasks of gardening remind us of nature’s resilience, reflecting our own inner strength and capacity to renew.
